Snap Launches Generative AI Chatbot Using OpenAI

Snap is launching a generative AI chatbot using the same OpenAI model behind ChatGPT. Snap’s “My AI” chatbot comes as part of the $3.99 Snapchat+ premium subscription service, and will assist like ChatGpt with answering questions and brainstorming ideas, with an eye specifically for enhancing Snapchat’s user experience.

The Snap AI chatbot sets up a conversational interface to answer questions and carry out tasks, but with a personality and style trained by Snap for that purpose. The generative AI is accessible in the Chat tab for Snapchat+ subscribers, though it isn’t a search engine so much as an AI interpretation of a helpful friend. The social media company also added plenty of caveats to the news. The features comes with warnings about hallucinations and the chatbot’s vulnerability to being prompted into inappropriate comments and attitudes despite attempts to train safety rails into it based on Snap’s own guidelines. The company also noted the conversations with the AI will be stored to use to improve it and that users shouldn’t share secrets with the AI.

“My AI can recommend birthday gift ideas for your BFF, plan a hiking trip for a long weekend, suggest a recipe for dinner, or even write a haiku about cheese for your cheddar-obsessed pal. Make My AI your own by giving it a name and customizing the wallpaper for your Chat,” Snapchat explained in its announcement. “As with all AI-powered chatbots, My AI is prone to hallucination and can be tricked into saying just about anything. Please be aware of its many deficiencies and sorry in advance!”

Generative Chat Growth

Generative AI chatbots are popping up from a huge number of companies rushing to employ models created by OpenAI or other developers. NLX recently debuted a customer service AI system using OpenAI’s API, a popular approach used by Yext, LivePerson, Gupshup, and Kore.ai. Snap’s version shares some similarities with the booming market for productivity-focused custom generative AI tools, including chatbots like Notion AI and Hour One.
