Jasper Buys Generative AI Image Editor Clipdrop from Stability AI

Jasper AI has acquired generative AI image creation and editing service Clipdrop from Stability AI for an undisclosed price. Stability AI bought Clipdrop via its parent brand, Init ML, less than a year ago. Jasper plans to use Clipdrop to develop its multimodal generative AI tools for enterprise marketing, while Stability AI moves away from direct consumer products.

Jasper Clipdrop

Clipdrop uses machine learning and generative AI to provide image manipulation tools on desktop and mobile devices. The software can remove objects and text from images and export subjects. It can also synthetically adjust lighting and zoom in on parts of images. Clipdrop’s technology will allow Jasper to offer more advanced image creation and editing features. Jasper business customers can now access Clipdrop through the API and integrated copilot, with deeper integration on the way.

“Marketing is visual,” Jasper CEO Timothy Young said. “The addition of Clipdrop to Jasper will advance our vision to be the most comprehensive end-to-end marketing copilot in the industry, powering all the formats, channels, and functions enterprise marketing teams need. A copilot this robust will enable the enterprises we serve to go beyond simple AI prompts to achieve more personalized marketing, better informed automation, and improved optimization across their entire strategy.”

Jasper’s decision to buy Clipdrop follows a strategic shift after a round of layoffs in July and Young replacing former CEO Dave Rogenmoser. The company had been moving toward servicing the marketing industry via the Jasper Campaigns platform and enterprise services through the Jasper Chat conversational generative AI engine. The pivot became necessary for many generative AI writing assistant companies when ChatGPT exploded on the market.

Jasper’s $125 million raise in the fall of 2022 helped buy some time for Jasper to create the Jasper for Business suite of tools underlying the other products. Acquiring Clipdrop continues that pursuit. Clipdorp co-founders Cyril Diagne, Damien Henry, and Jonathan Blanchet will continue to run Clipdrop from their Paris office, with Henry taking on a leadership role for Jasper as part of the deal. Clipdrop will also still be available as a standalone consumer product.

“We are excited about what Clipdrop technology can do inside Jasper’s copilot for marketing teams,” Henry said. “There are natural synergies between the two companies and a clear focus on creating the best multimodal platform for marketers. We can’t wait to get started.”

Stability Modeling

When Stability AI bought Init ML, Clipdrop claimed to have attracted more than 15 million users since launching in July of 2020, raising just $1.26 million in a 2021 seed funding round. Clipdrop was Stability’s first acquisition following its $101 million raise in 2022. Selling it so soon suggests Stability wants to keep the focus on its growing stable of open-source LLMs and related projects over managing specific products like Clipdrop.

“Jasper has been a valued partner, leveraging Stability AI models for many years,” Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque said. “We’re thrilled to see Clipdrop expand their offering by joining forces with Jasper. We will continue to partner with Clipdrop on research and deliver our cutting-edge models to their platform.”
