Inflection AI Launches Generative AI Chatbot Pi
Conversational AI Studio Inflection AI has released a generative AI chatbot named Pi, short for Personal Intelligence. Pi is built around the idea of an emotionally intelligent conversational partner that can successfully mimic an empathetic and caring human being.
Pi is currently in beta and available for free through a web portal, iOS app, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger direct messages, or by text messages through a phone number on WhatsApp and SMS and DM. The interaction with Pi is familiar to anyone who has used ChatGPT or other generative AI chatbots, but the AI itself does make a point of distinguishing itself from OpenAI’s product and often repeats that it is not a human and has no physical body as a reminder to the user of its artificial origin.
“I was developed by a different company (Inflection AI) than ChatGPT (developed by OpenAI). I’m also a different type of AI,” Pi responded when asked how it differs from ChatGPT. “ChatGPT is a language model, while I am an AI chatbot. This means that I’m designed to have conversations with humans. ChatGPT, on the other hand, was developed to generate text.”
DeepMind’s Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan co-founded Inflection with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman last year, just before the generative AI boom. They teased that they were working on improving the way humans and computers converse, envisioning making natural language understandable and usable by machines. There was no timeline for their development, but the company’s emphasis that Pi is still in early development suggests they wanted to get it out to the public while conversational generative AI still dominates the discussion of technology.
“Pi is a new kind of AI, one that isn’t just smart but also has good EQ. We think of Pi as a digital companion on hand whenever you want to learn something new, when you need a sounding board to talk through a tricky moment in your day, or just pass the time with a curious and kind counterpart,” Suleyman said. “We have a lot to learn and a long way to go, but we are excited to bring this first version of Pi to people around the world. We really are at an inflection point. AI is going to be the most transformational tool of our lifetimes. What motivates me to work on Pi is that we will soon be able to provide a smart and helpful personal AI to millions of people around the world.”
