DeepMind and LinkedIn Co-Founders Unveil New Conversational AI Startup Inflection AI

DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman are partnering to launch conversational AI startup Inflection AI. The new company hasn’t revealed many details but stated it will focus on boosting human-machine communication.

Inflection’s long-term goal is smoothing conversations between humans and computers to where any machine will understand and respond to natural language like voice assistants. That may take several years, however. Suleyman will serve as Inflection CEO, joined by third co-founder and fellow DeepMind alumnus Karén Simonyan, who is taking up the chief scientist position. Suleyman left DeepMind in mid-2019 for a different role at Google before moving to Greylock that December. Hoffman had joined Greylock after stepping down as LinkedIn CEO in 2009. Hoffman will join Inflection’s board but stick around full-time as a general partner at venture capital firm Greylock Partners, where Suleyman is also a partner.

“Recent advances in artificial intelligence promise to fundamentally redefine human-machine interaction. We will soon have the ability to relay our thoughts and ideas to computers using the same natural, conversational language we use to communicate with people. Over time these new language capabilities will revolutionize what it means to have a digital experience,” Suleyman wrote in a blog post. “Inflection will be an AI-first consumer products company, incubated at Greylock, with all the advantages and expertise that come from being part of one of the most storied venture capital firms in the world.”
