Anthropic Introduces Upgraded Generative AI Chatbot ‘Claude 2’
Generative AI startup Anthropic has released the latest iteration of its generative AI chatbot Claude, succinctly named Claude 2. Anthropic claims to have improved the logic, math, and programming skills of its ChatGPT competitor in the update from Claude 1.3. Claude 2 is accessible in beta on a new website and in a limited API without changing the price, encouraging clients to explore Claude 2’s features.
Claude on Claude
Anthropic designed Claude’s large language model with an eye toward addressing issues facing ChatGPT and other generative AI chatbots, particularly incorrect answers and bizarre conversational tangents. Claude 2’s emphasis on better reasoning and logic skills fits with that vision, and the test results seem to bear it out. Claude 2 scores above the 90th percentile on the GRE’s reading and writing tests, improved 2.8% to 88% when solving the GSM8k grade-school math problems, and 2.5% on the bar exam’s multiple-choice section, correctly answering 76.5% of the questions compared to Claude 1.3. The AI also scores higher on the Python coding test Codex HumanEval, jumping from 56% to 71.2%.
Claude’s conversations online and through its API will include other upgrades rolled out by Anthropic, including the massive context window, which defines how much content from a prompt the model will use to answer questions. Anthropic widened the window from 9,000 tokens to 100,000 tokens, around 75,000 words, in May. For comparison, the standard version of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model is 8,000 tokens, and the largest maxes out at 32,000 tokens.
“Think of Claude as a friendly, enthusiastic colleague or personal assistant who can be instructed in natural language to help you with many tasks,” Anthropic wrote in a blog post about the new chatbot. “Claude 2 powers our chat experience, and is generally available in the US and UK. We are working to make Claude more globally available in the coming months. You can now create an account and start talking to Claude in natural language, asking it for help with any tasks that you like.”
Anthropic claims thousands of companies are working with the Claude API. The list includes Quroa’s Poe generative AI chatbot hub, DuckDuckGo’s DuckAssist tool, productivity app Notion’s writing assistant Notion AI, and Zoom, a recent investor in Anthropic, has embedded Claude in its platform. Generative AI platform Jasper is also employing the Claude API among its mix of models for enterprise use.
“We are really happy to be among the first to offer Claude 2 to our customers, bringing enhanced semantics, up-to-date knowledge training, improved reasoning for complex prompts, and the ability to effortlessly remix existing content with a 3X larger context window,” Japser vice president of engineering Greg Larson said in a statement. “We are proud to help our customers stay ahead of the curve through partnerships like this one with Anthropic.”
