Opera Taps Google Gemini Models to Augment Browser Generative AI Assistant Aria
Web browser Opera is partnering with Google Cloud to enhance its Aria generative AI assistant with Google’s Gemini large language models (LLMs). Gemini will add free image generation tools to Aria via Google’s Imagen 2 model on Vertex AI, as well as a more human voice to read out text on the screen. Aria will also be able to provide users with more relevant and up-to-date information than before.

“Our companies have been cooperating for more than 20 years,” Opera executive vice president of partnerships Per Wetterdal explained. “We are excited to be announcing the deepening of this collaboration into the field of generative AI to further power our suite of browser AI services.”
“We’re happy to elevate our long standing cooperation with Opera by powering its AI innovation within the browser space,” Google Cloud managing director for the Nordic region Eva Fors said. “We believe the future of AI will be open, so we’re providing access to the best of Google’s infrastructure, AI products, platforms and foundation models to empower organizations to chart their course with generative AI.”
Aria won’t always use Gemini, just when it makes the most sense. The AI assistant employs Opera’s multi-LLM Composer AI engine to access the model appropriate to the user’s request. Opera’s aim is to curate personalized and efficient browsing experiences for its users. Since launching the AI-centered Opera One browser last year, Opera has rapidly added a growing list of generative AI tools.
Most recently, the browser added on-device LLM support, which allows users to keep their data local to their devices and avoid the need to send information to a server. Many other upgrades have focused on Aria and its research, summarization, and composition abilities. Opera has repeatedly improved Aria’s writing ability and even enabled users to teach Aria to write in their style by submitting examples of their writing.
To support the generative AI integration with its software, Opera recently established a green energy-powered AI data cluster in Iceland. Equipped with Nvidia DGX supercomputing tech, this facility is designed to scale with Opera’s AI initiatives and keep up with the computing power demands.
