OpenAI WIll Debut GPT Store for Custom Generative AI Apps Next Week

OpenAI will unlock the doors of the GPT Store for custom generative AI apps built on its large language models next week, according to an email sent to those who have experimented with building their own GPT. Developers who create a GPT on the platform can share them in the GPT Store, with the option to eventually monetize how they’ve leveraged the LLM for a specialized service.

OpenAI’s email comes from the “ChatGPT Team” and is a short message about the plan to launch the GPT Store. Essentially, those interested in putting their GPTs in the GPT Store will need to check that the app is compliant, verify their own profile, and ensure that the GPT is set to ‘Public’ when published.

When recently restored OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveiled plans for GPTs, he described them as the next step for ChatGPT, capturing the niche expertise unavailable in the broader generative AI chatbot. GPTs can be tailored to particular tasks or industries. The GPT builder automates customization with a no-code interface for uploading specialized data, configuring responses, and more. The builder lets users guide personality, conversational style, and integration of tools like DALL-E for image generation.

The GPT Builder is limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers and OpenAI enterprise customers. Enterprise users can build internal-only agents for employees, including specialized utility services. OpenAI has said it won’t allow data monitoring or sharing from private GPT chats but that creators will get some usage analytics to refine their agents. The company will also use moderation to block inappropriate content.

Rewarding that creativity will be possible for developers who share their creations on the GPT Store. The GPT Store hints at a future where AI expertise across countless domains is packaged into easily accessible apps. Altman’s demo of the GPT Store showed a searchable database, with some standouts spotlighted by OpenAI. The monetization plans haven’t been laid out yet but will likely be only relevant for the most popular GPTs at first. That approach has a lot in common with the Poe creator economy Quora introduced recently.

“Revenue sharing is important to us. We’re going to pay people who build the most useful and the most used GPTs a portion of our revenue,” Altman said at the OpenAI Dev Day. “We’re excited to foster a vibrant ecosystem with the GPT Store just from what we’ve been building ourselves over the weekend; we’re confident there’s going to be a lot of great stuff.”
