ChatGPT is Banned by These Primary and Secondary Schools
ChatGPT is provoking schools at all levels to revise their rules for software use, and a growing number are partially or completely banning OpenAI’s generative AI chatbot, prohibiting students from using it on school servers or even in aid of activities outside of school grounds. We’ve created a roundup of where educators are outlawing ChatGPT, one for primary and secondary schools and one for colleges and universities.
ChatGPT Expelled
- Seattle Public Schools banned ChatGPT, citing the chatbot’s inaccuracies and potential for plagiarism as the reasons to prohibit its use in December.
- Los Angeles Unified School District did the same, pointing to similar reasons.
- The New York City Department of Education banned ChatGPT in January. As one of the largest districts in the country, NYC appeared to set off a cascade of bans in other districts, including those below.
- Clifton Public Schools in New Jersey, Loudon County Public Schools in Virginia
- Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia,
- Prince George’s County in Maryland,
- Montgomery County Schools in Alabama
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Schools in North Carolina.
- Baltimore County Public Schools hasn’t officially changed its policies yet but has blocked the website on student devices and computers.
- The Anchorage School District hasn’t banned ChatGPT specifically but did update its policies to prohibit students from submitting AI-generated work under their own names.
In Australia, almost every state and territory’s department of education blocked ChatGPT on the school internet networks. The list includes:
- Western Australia
- New South Wales
- Queensland
- Victoria
- Tasmania
