Spotify Releases Generative AI Playlist Creator
Spotify has begun rolling out a new “AI Playlist” feature that turns text prompts into playlists using generative AI. The previously rumored beta tool appears as a chatbot able to translate any text description into a curated music collection as seen in the video above.

Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom and Australia can access AI Playlist on Android and iOS devices, with other regions to follow. Users simply type a prompt that can include any reference to activities, moods, artists, movies, and even colors of emojis. Once a prompt is entered, Spotify’s AI tailors a playlist to match the request. Users can then preview and manage the selection of songs, delete tracks, or modify the prompt to provide additional customization and refine the playlist. The more specific and descriptive the prompt, the better the results are likely to be, according to Spotify.
“With AI Playlist in beta, you can effortlessly turn your most creative ideas into playlists,” the company explained in a blog post. “Looking for “an indie folk playlist to give my brain a big warm hug,” “relaxing music to tide me over during allergy season,” or “a playlist that makes me feel like the main character”? AI Playlist has you covered. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert playlist creator, AI Playlist pairs our powerful personalization technology with AI to deliver that perfect musical mix, just for you.”
Though Spotify didn’t specifically cite the model behind the AI Playlist tool, the company’s rollout of generative AI features has included a partnership with OpenAI to leverage ChatGPT’s translation feature to reproduce podcasts in multiple languages with the same voices. There’s also Spotify’s AI DJ, which speaks in the voice of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships and host of its morning show, The Get Up, Xavier “X” Jernigan thanks to a voice clone produced with the synthetic voice platform developed by Sonantic, which Spotify acquired in 2022. Sonantic’s technology is best known for generating a deepfake of Val Kilmer’s voice for the Top Gun: Maverick film.
