Opera Unveils Native Browser Generative AI Service Aria
Web browser Opera has released a new, native generative AI service called Aria to its platform. Aria employs OpenAI’s ChatGPT large language model to compose text and even computer code, continuing the expanding range of generative AI tools Opera has rolled out this year.
Opera Aria
Aria is a free feature for Opera browsers, built into the platform without any additional downloads necessary. Users can interact with Aria to look for information online, including live web results. They can ask questions and get summaries and explanations of a website’s content, and ask the AI to produce social media posts based on website text. Though Aria relies on the ChatGPT model right now, Opera built Aria with its Composer infrastructure to enable connections to multiple models in future updates. To access Aria, Opera users can download the newest Opera One, and Android users can download the beta version of the Opera browser on the Google Play Store.
“AI is rapidly changing how we work, browse the web and naturally, how we think about browsers and the part they can play in users’ online experience,” Opera for PC product director Joanna Czajka said. “Fittingly, Aria is our first product that named itself.”
Generative Opera
Opera has been enthusiastic about adding more generative AI tools to its browsers, including offering both ChatGPT and ChatSonic as conversational partners capable of features like rewriting an article as a soap opera, sports commentary, or series of quiz questions. Aria extends Opera’s ‘Browser AI’ strategy, but it’s not alone in pushing for more generative AI in web experiences. Microsoft released the Bing AI chatbot earlier this year and, just this week, started linking its search results to ChatGPT. Meanwhile, DuckDuckGo’s DuckAssist feature leverages the Bing AI model to answer search queries by summarizing relevant parts of Wikipedia articles, while web browser Brave’s Summarizer uses in-house AI models for the same purpose. Meanwhile, Google is pitching its Bard AI as more of a ‘complementary’ service for its central search function.
“With Aria, Opera users have a built-in way of tapping into the potential of generative AI today for free,” Opera for Android vice president of product Stefan Stjernelund said. This is also only the beginning, with many more capabilities still to come.”
