Reddit and OpenAI have agreed to exchange Reddit’s data into ChatGPT and future generative AI models while the two companies collaborate on incorporating new generative AI features into Reddit’s platform. Through this partnership, OpenAI will utilize Reddit’s Data API to integrate real-time, structured content into its ChatGPT service and upcoming products. This will allow OpenAI’s AI models to more accurately understand and present content from Reddit, particularly focusing on current and trending topics. The collaboration aims to make Reddit’s vast repository of discussions more accessible to ChatGPT users, facilitating deeper engagement with Reddit communities.

“Reddit has become one of the internet’s largest open archives of authentic, relevant, and always up to date human conversations about anything and everything,” Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said. “Including it in ChatGPT upholds our belief in a connected internet, helps people find more or what they’re looking for, and helps new audiences find community on Reddit.”

OpenAI has been on something of a tear in signing deals with companies that can provide plenty of data to train its models. That includes a comprehensive arrangement with Stack Overflow, as well as compreshensive exchanges with multiple media companies, including The Financial Times (FT), Axel Springer, the Associated Press, Le Monde, and others. Much like those deals, the new arrangement offers Reddit the chance to introduce new generative AI-powered features tailored to its needs.

Reddit plans to leverage OpenAI’s generative AI technologies to enhance how users and moderators interact with the platform. OpenAI will also now serve as a Reddit advertising partner. Reddit has been keen to leverage its data since it went public, licensing it out is now a major element of Reddit’s revenue plans. The company valued its data licensing deals before it went public at $200 million, and the deal with OpenAI only pushed the company’s stock price up.

“We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features,” OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap said.

The arrangement was spearheaded by Lightcap, and OpenAI made a point of noting that he received approval from the Board of Directors for it. That’s partially because OpenAI CEO Sam Altman holds 8.7% of Reddit’s shares, making him the third largest shareholder. OpenAI has been making ostentatious moves to showcase independence from Altman in its financial decisions. For instance, Altman stepped away from direct oversight of the OpenAI Startup Fund in April after some questions were raised about a potential conflict of interest.
