OpenAI Launches ChatGPT iPhone App
OpenAI released the official ChatGPT App mobile app on Thursday. iPhone and iPad users can access at least some of the of the generative AI chatbot’s features and converse with it directly, as opposed to going through third-party services like Merlin and SoundHound.
Mobile ChatGPT
Rumors about the ChatGPT app began almost as soon as the chatbot appeared, and beta testing reportedly began back in January. The mobile app works much like the web client, defaulting to the GPT-3.5 ‘Turbo’ model for free users but offering GPT-4 to ChatGPT+ subscribers. You can see, rename, and export your chat history the same way too.
There are a few notable additions and limits to the mobile generative AI chatbot. The biggest new feature is voice input, which uses OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition model to transcribe spoken prompts into text that can a user can submit. There are no voice commands to submit the prompt and no text-to-speech tool to read the AI’s response, so the app falls short of the SoundHound Chat AI app in that respect. Otherwise, it feels a lot like the way ChatGPT as a mobile tool was used on an episode of South Park earlier this year. And while ChatGPT+ subscribers do still benefit from the better model and faster responses, there’s no way to turn on the new real-time web connection or use the plug-ins.
“The ChatGPT app is free to use and syncs your history across devices. It also integrates Whisper, our open-source speech-recognition system, enabling voice input. ChatGPT Plus subscribers get exclusive access to GPT-4’s capabilities, early access to features and faster response times, all on iOS,” OpenAI explained in its announcement. “With the ChatGPT app for iOS, we’re taking another step towards our mission by transforming state-of-the-art research into useful tools that empower people while continuously making them more accessible.”
