Clubhouse Expands Creator First Program to India as App Passes 5 Million Installs
Clubhouse is expanding its Creator First program to India, soliciting applications for social audio shows to support. The creators chosen will receive production and financial support. The push comes as the app passes 5 million installs in India, with more than 2 million active users.
Indian Expansion
Indian users started joining en masse when the Android version of the social audio app rolled out in May. India now counts the single largest number of Clubhouse users, despite it only very recently becoming available, according to app analysis by SensorTower. The growth triggers recently enacted laws in India requiring Clubhouse to hire staff in the country. The company has said it has already begun the process of hiring staff in India, ahead of those laws coming into force when the app hits 5 million active users. At that point, the law says social media companies need to hire people to handle compliance, customer complaints, and other governmental intermediaries. Clubhouse has also said it plans to bring other features available elsewhere to India soon, including the payment process for users to send cash to each other.
Creators in India
The Creator First program may help solidify the huge userbase by encouraging and supporting shows to lure users into spending more time on the app. The first round of 25 shows chosen by Clubhouse come from several countries around the world, but the app’s enormous growth in India over the last month likely helped encourage the startup to begin a country-specific version of the program there. Each creator is receiving $5,000 a month during the accelerator. They will also get technical equipment and ongoing production support for things like booking guests and setting up marketing and sponsorship deals. The exact details for India haven’t been announced, but the shape of the program is largely the same.
“Clubhouse is a global social audio company. Since our Android release just a few weeks ago, millions of people in India have downloaded Clubhouse to have real, meaningful, and often very fun conversations. We stand in awe of the Clubhouse creators in India who are sharing their talents with people all over the world,” Clubhouse wrote in announcing the Indian program. “The Creator First Program in India will cater to the unique needs of the Indian audience and creators. By participating in Clubhouse Creator First in India, we will help you with production and creative development, help you promote your show, and provide financial support via matching you with brands or a monthly stipend.”
