Google Home Added 600,000 More U.S. Users in 2018 Than Amazon Echo, But Amazon Echo Dot is Still the Most Owned Smart Speaker
- Google Home smart speakers added 7.2 million new U.S. users in 2018, 600k more than Amazon Echo
- Amazon Echo smart speakers still have a large installed base lead with over 40 million users compared to about 16 million for Google Home
- Amazon Echo Dot is the leading smart speaker by user count with a relative market share of 31.4% of users
The Google Home smart speaker user base expanded by 7.2 million in the U.S. in 2018 according to data compiled as part of the 2019 U.S. Smart Speaker Consumer Adoption Report. That reflects a rise of 600,000 more new Google Home users than Amazon Echo added in 2018. The result was Google Home closing its market share gap with Amazon Echo from about 53.5% at the end of 2017 to 37.2% a year later.
However, Amazon Echo still has 2.55-to-1 advantage Over Google Home with a 40 million strong smart speaker user base in the U.S. Google Home users total just under 16 million. The “Other” smart speaker category more than doubled its user base in 2018 on the strength of the Apple HomePod launch and the introduction of a number of Google Assistant enabled smart displays.
Amazon Echo Dot the Most Used Smart Speaker
Continuing a trend from 2018, the Amazon Echo Dot claimed the most smart speaker users at 31.4%. That was almost three times more than the comparably priced Google Home Mini at 11.2%. Echo Dot’s relative user base market share is down about 1% from year-end 2017 while Google Home Mini rose by about 2% on a relative basis among users. Interestingly, there are as many users of the more expensive Google Home as the Google Home Mini.
Keep in mind these figures represent users and not total devices in use. One user with three Echo Dots is still one user. So, in all likelihood total devices sold may be higher for the low-priced smart speakers such as Echo Dot and Google Home Mini. This analysis sought to determine how many users have each device. The data also show that Amazon Echo is slowing market share erosion on the strength of the Echo Dot and rise in smart display users.
