Google’s AI Can Lip-Read Better Than Humans

The Verge – Google’s DeepMind and the University of Oxford trained a neural network to lip-read with 46.8% accuracy. While that number doesn’t seem very impressive, it is when you compare it to a professional lip-reader whose accuracy is 12.4%. The DeepMind software called “Watch, Listen, Attend, and Spell,” was trained on over 5,000 hours of television with footage from shows like Newsnight, Question Time and the World Today. DeepMind researchers believe this new program could be used in many different ways. It could help the hearing-impaired understand conversations or for surveillance purposes. LINK
