OpenAI Hints at Upcoming GPT-4 Large Language Model Release Date
Microsoft Germany CTO Andreas Braun appears to have casually announced OpenAI’s next large language model (LLM), GPT-4, is about to arrive. Braun hinted to German tech publication Heise Online that it will have an official debut at Microsoft’s “The Future of Work with AI” event scheduled on March 16.

“We will introduce GPT-4 next week, there we will have multimodal models that will offer completely different possibilities — for example, videos,” Braun told Heise, elaborating only to say that it will also be multilingual in order to ensure that they can “make the models comprehensive.”
The fact that OpenAI’s news may have come from a Microsoft executive is surprising at first, but the two companies share a very deep relationship involving a huge amount of money. Microsoft reportedly invested an additional $10 billion into OpenAI in January for 49% of the company, which would give it effective control of OpenAI in nearly every context. OpenAI is not very territorial about announcements anyway, as it allowed Salesforce to announce the ChatGPT app for Slack OpenAI created.
Anticipation for GPT-4 has been growing of late following recent rumors of its arrival this quarter. The details have been as murky as the launch date until now. Still, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has referenced multimodal models that can handle input in the form of images or sounds, as opposed to the current text-only system.
“A reasonable prediction is that text inputs may return multimodal outputs such as text with images, charts, or video. I was not expecting video capabilities this soon, but Braun mentioned this specifically. Regardless, images and charts seem like a logical progression. It will be even more interesting if the models can output sounds or music along with text and images. You can imagine Microsoft Word and PowerPoint users would benefit from all of these feature expansions,” Voicebot founder Bret Kinsella pointed out in our Synthedia newsletter. “It sounds like GPT-4 is imminent. When you consider that GPT-3.5 and the new ChatGPT Turbo model are already so good that new businesses formed around the technology are growing quickly, GPT-4 could spur another wave of new businesses and new features added to existing products.”
