New Comic Series “Boxed” Highlights AI Fears in Pop Culture

AI is front and center in the discourse right now, and that was clearly on the minds of people at New York Comic Con (NYCC) this year in discussions across the event. The prominence of the topic was exemplified by the announcement of a new comic series called Boxed” from Comixology, set to debut its first issue on November 21.

Set in the not-too-distan-future, “Boxed” is set at the fictional (for now) Rapid Response, Artificial Intelligence Division (R.A.I.D.). This organization is tasked with the critical mission of investigating AI systems that deviate from their original programming. This is called going rogue, and the comic is about efforts to contain or “box” these AIs, keeping them isolated in underground caverns. The series starts with the CDC’s own AI system, Hippocrates, going rogue, and R.A.I.D. agent Frank Savage having to go after the threat, with twists and turns throughout. Savage must collaborate with a counter-intelligence AI system called Pandora, with which he shares a complicated history.

“Boxed” aims to capture the complexities and anxieties surrounding this transformative technology, according to the creative team behind the series, Writer Mark Sable and artist Jeremy Haun. Sable is known for his work on “Miskatonic,” while Haun’s art in “Red Mother” has drawn plenty of kudos. The two collaborated on “Two-Face: Year One,” a well-regarded series that then led to their new project, joined by colorist Nick Filardi and letterer Thomas Mauer, both of whom have extensive experience in the comic book industry.

The release of “Boxed” comes at a time when AI is a subject of intense debate. The technology’s rapid advancement has sparked discussions about its potential benefits and risks. Rogue AI continues a tradition in pop culture, including movies like “Ex Machina” and “The Matrix,” as well as TV series like “Westworld.” While AI art may not have copyright protection right now, who knows what will pop up at next year’s New York Comic Con?
