Jaguar Land Rover Integrates Alexa into All Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover is making Alexa the default voice assistant in all of its current and upcoming vehicles. Any existing Jaguar or Land Rover car with the company’s Pivi Pro infotainment system can add Alexa through an over-the-air update while future models will be sold with Alexa already included.

Alexa Pivi

Amazon and Jaguar Land Rover worked together on integrating Alexa in the Pivi Pro system to enable the voice assistant to control the car’s navigation, communication, media, and other functions. The voice assistant performs the same roles as a home-bound version tied to an Echo smart speaker or display. Having Alexa built-in means the voice assistant in the car will connect to a driver’s Amazon account using a QR code on the Pivi Pro to link the vehicle. That allows Alexa to incorporate the driver’s preferences and access their smart home devices. Last year, the car company first deployed Alexa on the new Range Rover, but the expansion will embed Alexa in more than 200,000 cars. Once set up, any of the car owner’s Alexa devices will be able to access information about the car and remotely manipulate the climate controls.

“The seamless integration of Amazon Alexa with our Pivi Pro infotainment system gives customers simple, intuitive voice control of regularly used features, making the driving experience even more enjoyable,” Jaguar Land Rover director of electrical and electronic engineering Alex Heslop explained. “The fact we can also offer this new feature to existing customers proves the value of our software-over-the-air-updates.”

Alexa Revs

Alexa’s deployment in cars has accelerated of late, with many significant partnerships announced over the last year. Most recently, auto giant Stellantis and Amazon announced plans to incorporate Alexa in millions of cars. Stellantis counts a couple of dozen big vehicle brands under its umbrella, the result of a merger by FCA and Groupe PSA. On the technology front, the new Alexa Auto SDK 4.0 and a vehicular version of Teachable AI  are keeping Alexa a major player in automobile AI.

“Customers around the world interact with Alexa billions of times each week, making life easier, more productive, and more fun,” Alexa Automotive International head Christian Mentz said. “We’re excited to deliver that same delightful, convenient experience to Jaguar and Land Rover customers – and because Alexa is always getting smarter, new features and capabilities will be added over time and delivered to their vehicles automatically.”
