Yesterday Huawei unveiled their new smartphone, the P30, at an event in Paris and announced that consumers who pre-order the P30 or the P30 Pro will receive a free Sonos One speaker valued at $199. The promotion is only available to residents of the U.K. or Ireland while supplies last. The entry-level Huawei P30 starts at $900, while the P30 Pro is $1200 and are available for pre-order now at qualifying retailers. The promotion will run between March 26th and April 4th. Buyers have between April 18th and June 2nd to submit a claim form in order to receive the Sonos One speaker.

A Marketing Tactic to Gain Market Share

The Huawei and Sonos partnership is a marketing ploy for two companies who are fighting to increase their market share in their respective fields. Huawei claims only 6.5% of the smart phone market behind Apple and Samsung, while Sonos struggles to break out of the “Other” category in the U.K. Other companies have seen sales increase with similar smart speaker giveaways.  In November 2018, Spotify offered a free Google Home mini to new family plan subscribers which generated an 11% increase in the product category according to the company.

The success of Spotify’s Google Home mini giveaway campaign demonstrates the value of smart speakers for consumers. Given that the new Huawei smartphone models are significantly more expensive than an annual Spotify membership, it makes sense that the company chose to giveaway one of the higher priced smart speakers on the market with the Sonos One. The decision to use the Alexa-enabled Sonos One could also be more popular with consumers as Amazon is currently the smart speaker market share leader in the U.K.
