Grammarly Launches GrammarlyGO Suite of Generative AI Writing and Editing Tools

Grammarly introduced a collection of generative AI writing and editing tools this week called GrammarlyGO. The company envisions GrammarlyGO as a productivity aide for communication, expanding on the spelling, grammar, and style guidance offered by the company’s apps and plug-ins.

GrammarlyGO

GrammarlyGO augments the existing Grammarly toolkit with new features, most notably the ability to draft an essay or other material from a short prompt written by the user. That feature extends to writing replies to emails after the user clicks on a suggested intent like “I’m interested.” The AI can also help brainstorm ideas and design outlines to kickstart a project for the user.

GrammarlyGO’s generative AI covers editing and rewriting existing text as well. It can extend or shorten a piece and change the tone and style to fit the user’s goal. The AI guide offers a few adjectives as possible tone choices, but users can write their own tone preferences if they choose. That aspect builds on the tone rewrite feature Grammarly introduced last year, with the flexibility of generative AI to accommodate more than just three tone options.

“Generative AI represents an inflection point in innovation that Grammarly can incorporate to deliver even more value for our customers,” said Grammarly global head of product Rahul Roy-Chowdhury said. “For well over a decade, we’ve delivered the leading AI-enabled communication assistant focused on helping people and businesses overcome the real challenges they face every day. Now we enter a new phase in our vision to support our customers across the entire lifecycle of communication, going past revision into conception and composition—all while maintaining our high standards of quality, privacy, and security.”

Generative Writing Assistance

Large language models have an obvious connection with writing and editing. Generative AI’s potential as a writing assistant has led to a rapid proliferation of tools like GrammarlyGO from new startups and extant productivity software providers like the Notion AI assistant released last month. GrammarlyGo is built with OpenAI’s GPT-3-derived API, despite having its own algorithm handling the spelling and grammar help. Demand for professional content creation AI assistants has led to the adoption of APIs offered by OpenAI and rivals like Jasper. Major brands like website creator Wix and graphic design platform Canva all count AI writing assistance powered by a mix of generative AI APIs among their features.
